So… funny story…
Last week’s blog?
Yeah. About that.
It didn’t happen.
Not because I forgot.
Not because I didn’t care.
But because life said, “ubuze bani?”
Work was WORKING.
And somewhere between making sure everything was in place, and trying to remember if I drank water… the blog quietly slipped through the cracks.
And this got me thinking about the great myth of adulthood,
“Balance.”
Haaaa k’yanyiwa!
We love the idea of balance. You know the version:
- Green smoothies or if you’re me its herbal teas
- Inbox at zero
- Home-cooked dinners
- Eight hours of sleep
- Throwing in a short run in the evening
- A thriving social life
- And not forgetting… inner peace.
But let’s talk about the real version.
The real version looks like:
- Answering emails while having your breakfast because whilst you will want to close that laptop, umsebenzi smile, work is waiting.
- Scheduling a meeting during your “lunch break.”
- Realising at 8pm that you haven’t watched all the gazillion TikTok reels from the gentleman I share my home Wifi with.
- Sleeping late because…multiple streams of income, hello!
Balance isn’t always 50/50.
Sometimes it’s 80/20.
Sometimes it’s 100/0.
Sometimes it’s survival.
When Work Takes the Front Seat
Last week, work needed me. Fully.
There are seasons like that.
Big projects.
Tight timelines.
Moments where you can’t just “log off and rest.”
And that’s the tricky part, right? Because you want to deliver. You want to show up well. You want to exceed expectations.
But while you’re doing that, life is still happening your body needs rest your people need you and you need you.
So… What Is Balance Really?
Maybe balance isn’t doing everything perfectly.
Maybe it’s:
- Knowing when to push.
- Knowing when to pause.
- And forgiving yourself when you can’t do both.
Missing last week’s blog bothered me. Not because anyone was keeping score but because I really want to consistent and I just got back to blogging so it seems too early to be dropping the ball. But what if consistency also includes grace?
What if part of balance is allowing yourself to miss out on something without turning it into a personality flaw?
So zhlobo labangane, friends and family, how are YOU balancing?
Are you in a heavy work season?
Are you overcommitted?
Are you thriving?
Are you pretending to thrive? 👀
Love & light 🧡
